SuperPower Sunday: Initiative

Welcome to Superpower Sunday!

This week’s Super-Character skill is Initiative:

Recognizing and doing what needs to be done before I am asked to do it.

Character Bookshelf Series, Institute in Basic Youth Conflicts

“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”

Romans 12:21

Please Share! In the comments section below, let us know what you learned and tell your success stories from the last week of practicing humility. Also, we’d love to read your ideas of how we might exercise initiative between now and next Superpower Sunday!

Next door is a cabin owned by missionaries to West Africa. We have a key to check on the place once in awhile. When we found out they were coming in to a stale unused cabin we went grocery shopping, made sure the frig and freezer, water and hot water were turned on and mowed the lawn to outfit them till they could get acclimated. Initiative can be a very small thing but it’s getting out and doing something.

What a great example! I remember (way back when) feeling pretty proud of some stats I was making in high school softball. My coach didn’t mention them at practice and I asked her why. I was surprised by her annoyance when she told me “you need to take a little initiative”. I didn’t even know what that meant! She wanted me to do more than excel in my position. She wanted to see leadership and me going out of my way to help others step up their game. It was a far more valuable lesson for me than pitching and hitting.
